Lorena Stove

Thanks to the project that was financed by the Canada In Mexico fund and with the contribution of sponsors (voluntary sponsors), 93 Lorena stoves were built in the communities of Tocob Leglemal, Chapoy, Hidalgo, La Victoria, Ixmocoy and Cardenas.

LORENA is an improved stove, built of mud and sand, designed with the aim of significantly reducing the use of firewood as well as reducing the intramural concentrations of the combustion products and therefore improving the human health of the users.

The majority of the population located in developing countries uses biomass (firewood) to cook food, as well as for heating and water heating. In the vast majority of cases, biomass is burned in open hearths. In these devices the combustion is incomplete, which causes large emissions of particles and polluting gases, which in turn can cause health problems in the exposed population.
The LORENA stove offers multiple benefits, the main ones are:
- It reduces the consumption of firewood by around 50%, which saves time and money in the collection and purchase of firewood.
- It reduces the emissions of contaminants in the kitchen and, therefore, the concentrations of the same, with which they diminish potential effects in the users, such as irritation of the eyes and the respiratory illnesses.
- Develops skills and creates jobs in communities: although it is well known that improved wood stoves can reduce contamination inside the kitchen, there is no quantitative information.
